From the head of a leading orthopedic practice to a surgeon who surpassed 18,000 surgeries, here are four notable surgeons and leaders who announced their retirement in the first half of 2021:

1. Michael West, CEO of Rothman Orthopaedic Institute in Philadelphia, retired March 31 after 22 years with the practice. He joined Rothman when the group only had seven physicians and one office. Since then, the practice has grown to about 200 physicians across 90 locations.

2. Gregory Lucier retired from NuVasive's board of directors on May 18. He joined the board in 2013 and became chairman and CEO in 2015. Mr. Lucier left his role as CEO in 2018 and remained on the board.

3. Renowned foot and ankle specialist Thomas Clanton, MD, retired, and he appointed C. Thomas Haytmanek, MD, to succeed him. Dr. Clanton joined Vail, Colo.-based The Steadman Clinic in 2009, and his career spanned 37 years. 

4. Barth Green, MD, performed his final surgery at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, calling time on a five-decade career as a neurosurgeon. He performed more than 18,000 surgeries and served 22 years as chair of the neurological surgery department at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
