Barth Green, MD, recently performed his final surgery at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, calling time on a five-decade career as a neurosurgeon, CBS Miami reported May 28.

Dr. Green performed more than 18,000 surgeries, according to the report. His areas of expertise included complex spine disorders, spinal deformity and spinal tumors.

The surgeon served 22 years as chair of the neurological surgery department at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. He also co-founded the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis.

In 2016, the University of Miami Health System appointed Dr. Green executive dean for global health and community service, a position he will continue to hold.

Dr. Barth will be focusing on disaster responses in countries such as the Bahamas, Ecuador, Peru, Haiti and India. "I believe the opportunity to help people will be even greater now than being tied up in the operating room 30 to 40 hours a week," he told CBS Miami.
