Drs. Todd Lanman, Gornet Matthew publish follow-up data on 2-level cervical disc replacement

Spine

Todd Lanman, MD, and Gornet Matthew, MD, examined the efficacy of Medtronic's Prestige LP device in 2-level cervical disc replacements and published findings in the Journal of Neurosurgery.

Four insights:

1. The 10-year follow-up paper found that discs next to the point of fusion required surgery twice as often as discs adjacent to artificial discs.

2. The authors compared the clinical safety and effectiveness of cervical disc arthroplasty to treat degenerative disease in the cervical spine at two adjacent levels to the use of anterior cervical discectomy and fusion.

3. Replacement at two adjacent levels with implantation of the Prestige LP device demonstrated higher fusion rates than ACDF at 10 years, according to the paper.

4. The paper also noted statistical superiority when comparing results of the Neck Disability Index, neurological success and neck pain scores.
