Rothman Orthopaedic Institute ends relationship with Philadelphia Eagles

Philadelphia-based Rothman Orthopaedic Institute broke ties with the NFL's Philadelphia Eagles over future malpractice risk, a spokesperson for the practice confirmed to Becker's.

"Rothman Orthopaedic Institute has ended its longstanding role as the official team physicians for the Philadelphia Eagles," a spokesperson for Rohman said in a June 19 email to Becker's. "The decision follows the jury verdict related to Christopher Maragos’ malpractice claim against Rothman Orthopaedics Institute in which Rothman physicians did not perform Maragos’ surgery. While appeals of the Maragos decision are ongoing, the potential future liability remains too high. Our priority is to avoid further financial disruptions and ensure continued high-quality care for all patients in the communities we serve."

In February 2023, former Eagles team captain Chris Maragos won a $43.5 million jury verdict in his lawsuit that named a Pittsburgh-based physician with UPMC and the practice.

Rothman, which is liable for $15.8 million, of that verdict, is appealing, the Philadelphia Inquirer reported June 18.

The practice has been a partner with the team since 2004.

The Philadelphia Eagles didn't immediately respond to a request for comment from Becker's.
