Neurosurgeon joins Advocate Brain & Spine Institute as director of cerebrovascular program: 5 takeaways


Downers Grove, Ill.-based Advocate Health Care welcomed Demetrius Lopes, MD, to the Advocate Brain & Spine Institute, according to the Chicago Tribune.

Here are five takeaways:

1. Dr. Lopes will practice with Advocate Medical Group at Park Ridge, Ill.-based Advocate Lutheran General Hospital. He will serve as co-director of Advocate's stroke program and as medical director of the cerebrovascular and neuroendovascular program.

2. Board-certified in neurosurgery, Dr. Lopes specializes in innovative approaches to treat stroke and other brain and spinal cord diseases. He has performed more than 1,000 brain aneurysm repairs.

3. Dr. Lopes has authored more than 200 articles and chapters. He serves as the editor-in-chief of Neurovascular Exchange.

4. Previously, Dr. Lopes served as the surgical director of interventional services and the comprehensive stroke center at Chicago-based Rush University Medical Center.

5. After earning his medical degree from Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil, Dr. Lopes underwent neurovascular fellowship training at the State University of New York at Buffalo.
