7 fast facts on the orthopedic landscape in Texas

As one of the most populous states in the U.S., Texas ranks highly in multiple categories for orthopedic care.

Here are seven facts to know about orthopedics in the state:

1. Houston Methodist Hospital, Texas Scottish Rite Hospital for Children in Dallas, Baylor St. Luke's Medical Center in Houston and Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas were ranked among the best orthopedic hospitals in the world by Newsweek.

2. Houston Methodist Hospital was named the best orthopedic hospital in the state by U.S. News & World Report.

3. Baylor College of Medicine and the University of Texas Health Sciences Center, both in Houston, were among the schools to receive the most NIH funding for neurosurgery in 2021, receiving $6.3 million and $4.4 million, respectively.

4. Texas is home to three of the largest orthopedic groups in the U.S.: Houston-based OrthoLoneStar, San Antonio-based TSAOG Orthopaedics & Spine, and Plano-based  Texas Back Institute.

5. Texas is among the top three most densely populated states with ASCs that perform total joint surgeries.

6. Texas ranked No. 19 out of all 50 U.S. states for number of orthopedic ASCs per capita. The state has a total of 344 orthopedic ASCs, or 11.80 per 1 million people.

7. Orthopedic surgeons make an average of $333,309 per year in Texas, according to ZipRecruiter.
