Several disorders increase the risk of complications after hip fracture surgery, according to a study in Injury.

Researchers used the Finnish Performance, Effectiveness and Cost of Treatment database to assess 68,800 hip fracture patients treated between 1999 and 2011 in Finland. The study authors evaluated the risk factors associated with early readmission due to surgical complications after hip fracture surgery.

Early readmission within three months due to hip fracture surgery complications occurred in 4.6 percent of patients. Readmission rates were higher among patients with:

  • Heavy alcoholism
  • Parkinson's disease
  • Preexisting osteoarthritis
  • Rheumatic disease
  • Femoral neck fracture
  • Depression
  • Psychotic disorder
  • Operative delay of at least three days or previous total hip arthroplasty treatment
