Orthopedic surgeon to know: Dr. F. Winston Gwathmey Jr. of UVA Health System

F. Winston Gwathmey Jr., MD, is an orthopedic surgeon at University of Virginia Health System in Charlottesville.

With expertise in sports medicine and hip arthroscopy, Dr. Gwathmey serves as medical director of UVA Health's sports medicine clinic as well as the associate residency program director of the health system's orthopedics department.

Dr. Gwathmey's additional specialties include anterior cruciate ligament injury, ankle sprain, rotator cuff injury and Achilles tendon rupture.

A team physician for athletic programs at UVA and Harrisonburg, Va.-based James Madison University, Dr. Gwathmey previously worked as an assistant team physician for the New England Patriots and alongside medical staffs of the Boston Red Sox and Boston Bruins.

Dr. Gwathmey has research interests in knee ligament injuries, hip injuries in athletes and shoulder instability. He has published more than 40 peer-reviewed papers and authored 20 book chapters on topics such as hip arthroscopy and knee dislocation.

After earning his medical degree from Norfolk-based Eastern Virginia Medical School, Dr. Gwathmey completed his residency at Charlottesville-based UVA School of Medicine and a sports medicine fellowship at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston.
