Hip arthroscopy patients who take psychotropic medications are at a significantly higher risk of poor outcomes, according to a study in The American Journal of Sports Medicine.
Study authors reviewed the medical records of 880 consecutive patients who underwent hip arthroscopy, assessing the number and types of PTMs patients were taking at the time of their procedure. All hips were assessed with the Byrd modified Harris Hip Score preoperatively.
Here are three things to know:
1. Nearly half — 48 percent — of patients were taking psychotropic medications at the time of their procedure.
2. Preoperative scores for both groups were similar, but the psychotropic group’s scores were significantly lower at six, 12 and 24 months postoperatively.
3. Adolescents who underwent hip arthroscopy and took psychotropic medications at the time of their operation did not have significantly different scores than adolescent patients who did not take the medications.
