Longtime Cubs orthopedic surgeon Dr. Michael Schafer passes away at 76

Orthopedic surgeon Michael Schafer, MD, 76, passed away, MLB reports.

Here are three things to know:

1. Dr. Schafer served as the Chicago Cubs’ orthopedic consultant for more than 30 years. While with the team, he treated Andrew Dawson, Ryne Sandberg and Rick Sutcliffe, among others.

2. With expertise in treating spinal disorders and sports injuries, Dr. Schafer was chairman of orthopedics at Chicago-based Northwestern Memorial Hospital for 35 years.

3. After earning his medical degree from Iowa City-based University of Iowa Roy J. and Lucille A. Carver College of Medicine, Dr. Schafer completed his residency at Northwestern University in Chicago. He completed a spine surgery fellowship through the National Foundation Traveling Fellowship in Australia and a North American travelling fellowship.
