Today, 2,063 graduated osteopathic medical students successfully matched to osteopathic residencies.
Here are five highlights:
1. The other half of the Class of 2016 awaits the results of the MD Match, which will be announced on March 14.
2. Osteopathic physicians may choose between two systems for their post-graduate education.
3. The results of the DO Match:
- Of the 3,050 current and recent graduates who participated in the American Osteopathic Association Intern/Resident Registration Program, 74 percent successfully matched for a total of 2,255 placements.
- Primary care accounted for 50 percent of all matches with a total of 1,118 placements.
- Seventy-seven applicants matched in obstetrics and gynecology, up from 74 matches in 2015.
- Sixty-five applicants matched into pediatrics, up 27 percent from 2015.
- Psychiatry matched 54 applicants, an increase of 31 percent from 2015.
- Orthopedic surgery matched 118 applicants, up 9 percent from 2015.
- In non-primary care specialties, 1,017 positions were filled.
4. Osteopathic medicine is one of the fastest growing segments of healthcare, with one of every four incoming medical students attending an osteopathic medical school.
5. Over the past decade, 12 states have more than doubled the number of DOs practicing in their communities.
