A reportedly more affordable and high quality knee implant, the Axis Knee System, has been manufactured by a Filipino medical device firm, with funding from the Department of Science and Technology’s Philippine Council for Health Research and Development, according to Philstar.com.

Here are four things to know:

1. Jude Sasing, president of Orthopaedic International, said the knee implant is on the market, and is made more affordable for Filipinos who want knee replacements.

2. Mr. Sasing said they will also provide knee replacement surgery training for all general orthopedic surgeons in the country, according to the report.

3. Orthopedic surgeons, engineers and consultants from the United States, Japan and China participated in the research and development phase of the product.

4. Mr. Sasing claimed the Axis Knee System reduces knee replacement costs by 40 percent to 50 percent.
