Thirty-one medical students are set to participate in the NFL Diversity in Sports Medicine Pipeline Initiative.

The program puts students through one-month rotations where they will work alongside orthopedic team physicians, primary care team physicians and athletic trainers, according to a July 18 news release from the NFL.

The program was created by the NFL, the NFL Physicians Society and the Professional Football Athletic Trainers Society and aims to increase diversity among students going into sports medicine and, eventually, among NFL medical staff.

This is the second year of the program, which had 14 students and eight NFL teams participate last year, the release said.
