Orthopedic

Surgery, and especially orthopedic surgery, is a traditionally male-dominated field. Despite that fact, women orthopedic surgeons across the country are excelling.

Here are 90 women orthopedic surgeons currently practicing in the U.S.

Laura Alberton, MD, sports orthopedic surgeon at Scripps Health in La Jolla, Calif., has expertise in ACL injuries, knee ligament injuries and surgery, cartilage injuries, knee and shoulder arthroscopy, labral tears in the shoulder, meniscus tears and rotator cuff tears.

Dr. Lewis is the chair of orthopedic oncology at MD Anderson and the first woman to chair an orthopedic department at a freestanding cancer center. 

Nina Lightdale-Miric, MD, is an orthopedic surgeon and the director of the pediatric hand and upper extremity surgery program at the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles. She specializes in upper extremity and hand trauma and sports injuries and is interested in congenital hand reconstruction, microsurgery, birth brachial plexus surgery and cerebral palsy treatment of the upper extremity.

Julie Long, MD, serves as an orthopedic spine surgeon at Stanford (Calif.) Health Care-ValleyCare in Pleasanton and Adventist Health Sonora (Calif.). She specializes in spinal reconstructive surgery, scoliosis and spinal deformity surgery.

Joan O'Shea, MD,  is the founder of and a dually trained orthopedic spine and neurosurgeon at The Spine Institute of Southern New Jersey in Marlton. She specializes in treatment of spinal disorders.

Lois K. Osier, MD, is an orthopedic surgeon at OrthoCarolina in Pineville, N.C., specializing in hand surgery. Dr. Osier worked as a physical therapist before receiving her medical degree.

Elizabeth A. Ouellette, MD, is an orthopedic surgeon at Florida-based Baptist Health Orthopedic Care. She specializes in hand and wrist fracture, ligament tear, nerve injuries, joint instability and small joint replacement surgery.

Julie Switzer, MD, is an orthopedic surgeon and associate professor of orthopedic surgery at the University of Minnesota in St. Paul, specializing in trauma injuries in geriatric patients, osteoporosis and other diseases of bone metabolism. Her research interests include geriatric assessment, elder abuse, mandatory reporting and orthopedic fixation devices.

Joyce Tarbet, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at New Ulm (Minn.) M. Chris Testerman, MD, BSN, an orthopedic foot and ankle surgeon at Knoxville (Tenn.) Orthopaedic Clinic, specializes in arthritic conditions of the foot and ankle, forefoot deformities and foot and ankle sports injuries. 

Claudia Thomas, MD, is an orthopedic surgeon at Lady Lake, Fla.-based Unova Health. She was the first African American woman to become an orthopedic surgeon in the U.S.

Ruth Thomas, MD, an orthopedic surgeon at University of Arkansas Medical Center in Little Rock, Ariz., specializes in complex reconstructions of the foot and ankle. She was formerly the director of foot and ankle surgery at UAMS. In 2018, Dr. Thomas received the inaugural Women’s Leadership Award from the American Orthopaedic Foot & Ankle Society.

Jennifer Tucker, MD, is an orthopedic surgeon at Personalized Orthopedics of the Palm Beaches in Boynton Beach, Fla., specializing in hand and upper extremity surgery.

Katherine Vadasdi, MD, is an orthopedic surgeon and director of the ONS Women's Sports Medicine Center in Greenwich, Conn., and Stamford, Conn., specializing in adolescent and adult sports medicine as well as shoulder and elbow surgery.

Kristy Weber, MD, is an orthopedic oncology surgeon at Penn Medicine and Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, specializing in bone tumors, Ewing sarcoma, limb salvage surgery, osteosarcoma, sarcomas, benign and malignant bone and soft tissue tumors. She is the director of the sarcoma program in the Abramson Cancer Center at Penn Medicine, and served as the Penn Academy of Master Clinicians’s first woman president in 2019 and 2020.

Jennifer M. Weiss, MD, is an orthopedic surgeon at Southern California Permanente Medical Group in Los Angeles, specializing in pediatric orthopedic surgery and sports medicine.

Robin West, MD, is an orthopedic surgeon and chairman at Fairfax, Va.-based Inova Sports Medicine, specializing in orthopedic sports medicine. She also serves as the lead team physician for the Washington Nationals.
