In 2010, the highest average annual salary for orthopedic surgeons was reported from surgeons in the north central United States at $537,500, according to the Medscape Physician Compensation Report 2011.

Here are the statistics from every region in the country:

1. North central (Iowa, Missouri, Kansas, Nebraska, North Dakota, South Dakota): $537,500

2. Mid-Atlantic
(North Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Delaware, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Maryland): $385,497

3. Northwest
(Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, Alaska): $380,000

4. Northeast (New York, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine): $362,500

5. South Central
(Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas): $352,500

6. Great Lakes
(Ohio, Indiana, Wisconsin, Michigan, Illinois, Minnesota): $350,000

7. Southwest (New Mexico, Arizona, Idaho, Utah, Colorado): $341,000

8. Southeast (Louisiana, Alabama, Missouri, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, Kentucky Tennessee): $300,000

9. West (California, Hawaii): $250,000
