7 MIS spine devices & technologies making the headlines


Here are seven minimally invasive spine surgery devices and technologies making a splash in the industry.

SI-BONE iFuse patients 11x less likely to take opioids compared to non-surgical patients
SI-BONE reported results from two studies revealing the impact of the iFuse Implant System, a triangular-shaped device designed for minimally invasive sacroiliac joint fusion, on opioid use. The studies demonstrated patients treated with iFuse were less likely to take opioids compared to those receiving non-surgical care. A six-year study, published in Neurosurgery, found iFuse patients were 11 times less likely to take opioids at the last follow-up, than those patients who received either conservative care or radiofrequency ablation.

Dr. Kornelis Poelstra completes 200 spinal surgeries with Mazor X
Kornelis Poelstra, MD, performed 200 spine surgeries using the Mazor X system. Dr. Poelstra is an orthopedic surgeon and founder of The Spine Center of Excellence at Sacred Heart on the Emerald Coast in Miramar Beach, Calif. He is the first surgeon to reach 200 patient procedures performed with the Mazor X Surgical Assistance platform.

Surgeons perform 1st procedures with Spinal Elements' Lucent XP implant
Surgeons performed the first procedures using Spinal Elements' Lucent XP expandable interbody implant, which is designed to expand in height as well as increase in lordotic angle once implanted. The implant allows surgeons to achieve up to 15 degrees of lordotic angle, to help restore the patient's sagittal balance. Composed of PEEK, the Lucent XP is coated with Spinal Elements' Ti-Bond porous titanium coating.

Dr. Hamid Abbasi reaches 500th OLLIF procedure
Hamid Abbasi, MD, performed his 500th Oblique Lateral Lumber Interbody Fusion, which uses a 15 mm incision to heighten the disc and limit disc movement. The minimally invasive procedure is intended to treat pain from degenerative disc disease, herniated discs, spondylolisthesis, scoliosis and spinal stenosis.

FDA clears joimax's new minimally invasive spine surgery device
Endoscopic device company joimax received FDA clearance for a new minimally invasive spine surgery system. The FDA approved joimax's Endovapor 2 Multi Radio Frequency System. It is used for generating electrical power for the monopolar and biopolar cutting and coagulation of tissue structures during surgery. The Endovapor has integrated programs for spinal cord surgery. Surgeons use an intuitive touchpad technology while performing the procedure.

Wenzel Spine acquires OsteoMed's interspinous, facet fixation platforms
Wenzel Spine acquired OsteoMed's PrimaLOK SP Interspinous Fusion System as well as its PrimaLOK FF Facet Fixation System. The PrimaLOK SP Interspinous Fusion System features a polyaxial interspinous process device for the minimally invasive treatment of lumbar spinal disorders. The PrimaLOK FF Facet Fixation System includes a percutaneous facet screw system intended for the MIS treatment of lumbar spinal disorders. The platforms offer surgeons an expanded MIS solution when used with Wenzel Spine's VariLift-LX interbody fusion device.

Medtronic releases Signia Stapling System
Ireland-based Medtronic released the Signia Stapling System, a device expected to improve the quality of minimally invasive surgeries. The Signia represents the latest addition to Medtronic's MIS devices portfolio and provides surgeons with real-time feedback and automated responses to relevant data.
