Anthony Galea, MD, the controversial physician who was slated to moderate the North American Platelet-Rich Plasma Symposium in Toronto, will be replaced, according to a New York Daily News report.
Last year, Dr. Galea was indicted in a U.S. federal court for smuggling human growth hormones across the border and providing them to professional athletes. The symposium sponsor Harvest Technologies has also been criticized for asking Joseph Purita, MD, the physician who performed Yankee's pitcher Bartolo Colon's elbow and shoulder surgery with biologic healing, to serve as a panelist. Dr. Purita has been under investigation by the MLB to ensure HGH wasn't used; Dr. Purita maintains that it wasn't, although he has admitted to using HGH with other procedures.
According to the report, a Harvest spokeswoman said last month that the company "has nothing but positive things to say about these doctors. They definitely put patients first." The factors surrounding Dr. Galea's dismissal are still unclear, according to the report.
