Dr. James Andrews performs elbow surgery on Washington Nationals' Aaron Barrett: 6 things to know

James Andrews, MD, performed Tommy John surgery on Washington Nationals' Aaron Barrett, according to a Washington Post report.

Here are six things to know:

 

1. Mr. Barrett injured the elbow on his right arm.

 

2. He started having trouble with the elbow in June.

 

3. He may be able to return to the team late next season.

 

4. Dr. Andrews removed bone chips from Mr. Barrett's elbow and shaved down a bone spur.

 

5. Dr. Andrews, founding member of Andrews Sports Medicine and Orthopaedic Center in Birmingham, Ala., is one of the most prominent sports medicine physicians in the United States.

 

6. He is a past president of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine and is a senior consultant for the Washington Redskins.
