Dr. James Andrews: Youth sports, pitch counts & new partnership in Texas

Orthopedic Sports Medicine

DHealthcare Daily recently featured an interview with James Andrews, MD, discussing his experiences as a sports medicine physician. Dr. Andrews is one of the most sought-after sports medicine physicians as surgeon to professional athletes and former president of the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine.

He is also partnering with Children's Health System of Texas on new research and treatment facility for pediatric sports medicine.

In the article, Dr. Andrews discussed his stance on pitch counts — that they're good even for Little League — as well as not participating in the same sport year-round.

"We started tracking and studying [young athletes] in our research institute with the American Sports Institute in Birmingham and our foundation in Pensacola, and we started to recognizing the increase in youth sports industries to be what we called an epidemic," said Dr. Andrews. "And since then we've seen a 7 to 10 percent increase in the injuries since the year 2000."
