Thomas Byrd, MD, team physician for the Pittsburgh Pirates, recently performed hip surgery on Pirates pitcher Charlie Morton, according to an MLB report.
Mr. Morton first noticed hip problems a few years ago, but continued playing through the pain until it began affecting his performance late in the 2011 season. He opted to undergo surgery for a labrum tear in his hip, which will be succeeded by a six-month recovery period.
Mr. Morton hopes to take his place back on the mound by the beginning of next season.
