Question: What are the top three opportunities in sports medicine today?

Dr. Charles Bush-Joseph: The top three opportunities in sports medicine are:

1. The use of biologics in the operative and non-operative care of patients.
2. The bundling of care for sports medicine patients with the physician having more control over the total episode of care.
3. Advanced care practitioner networks (physician assistants, certified athletic trainers, nurse practitioners) will become more prevalent and allow surgeons more efficient use of time.

Q: How do you see the field of sports medicine changing over the next three to five years?

CBJ: The field of sports medicine will change in the next three to five years as follows:

1. Physicians will need to report quality of care via patient reported outcomes and participation in registries.
2. Virtually all procedures including osteotomies and shoulder replacements will be performed in an outpatient setting.
3. Surgical skills validation will become a part of board certification.
