Drs. William Ricci, Martin O'Malley operate on Minnesota Twins slugger Miguel Sano — 5 insights

New York City-based Hospital for Special Surgery physicians William Ricci, MD, and Martin O'Malley, MD, will insert a titanium rod into the left shin of Minnesota Twins' third baseman Miguel Sano, MLB.com.

Here's what you should know:

 

1. Mr. Sano suffered from a stress reaction in mid-August. The procedure will require six to eight weeks of recovery, but Mr. Sano will be ready for spring training.

 

2. Dr. Ricci is the chief of the combined HSS/NYP Orthopedic Trauma Service. He previously served as chief and fellowship director of orthopedic trauma service and vice chair of orthopedics at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis.

 

3. Dr. O'Malley is an associate attending orthopedic surgeon and the fellowship director of foot and ankle service at Hospital for Special Surgery.

 

4. Dr. O'Malley operated on several athletes and is a medical staff member for the Brooklyn Nets and the New York Knicks.

 

5. He is considered an expert in total ankle replacement, arthroscopy of the ankle and post-traumatic reconstruction of the foot and ankle.
