Penguins' team physician Dr. Dharmesh Vyas operates on Olli Maatta

Orthopedic Sports Medicine

Dharmesh Vyas, MD, Pittsburgh Penguins team physician, operated on defenseman Olli Maatta's shoulder on Wednesday, according to a report by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette.

A different physician performed a surgery on the same shoulder in May, the team said, and Mr. Maatta ultimately was cleared to start the season. The re-aggravation of the injury last week will keep him off the ice until next season.

Penguins' general manager Jim Rutherford said that he thought Mr. Matta pushed himself too hard without long enough of a period of rest.

"This is a layman's opinion, but I think if he had tried to push it and play through rehab here, there could have been more damage," Mr. Rutherford said. “This decision [to operate] that's taken place now is the right decision."

Dr. Vyaas specializes in orthopedic surgery with a subspecialty in sports medicine. He is affiliated with the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.
