American Board of Neurological Surgery names new director: 4 insights

The American Board of Neurological Surgery elected Steven Kalkanis, MD, to serve as its director for a six-year term, according to The Oakland Press.

Here are four insights:

1. Dr. Kalkanis serves as neurosurgery chairman at Detroit-based Henry Ford Health System. He is also the medical director of the Henry Ford Cancer Institute in Brownstown, Mich.

2. Board-certified in neurosurgery, he has a reputation as a leader in brain and spinal cord tumors.

3. Dr. Kalkanis is also the Congress of Neurological Surgeons' president-elect.

4. After earning his medical degree from Boston-based Harvard Medical School, Dr. Kalkanis completed his residency at Boston-based Massachusetts General Hospital.
