McGill University, located in Montreal, Québec, Canada, is teaming up with CAE Healthcare and DePuy Synthes Products to create a virtual reality platform for spine surgery training.

Here are four insights:

1. The VR platform will combine Graphic Processing Unit technology and Finite Element Method modeling with the goal of decreasing spine surgery training time.

2. Surgeons in training will utilize surgical tools connected to haptic controls that simulate complex spine surgery.

3. The platform will offer surgeons real-time feedback to mimic the sensor experience of spine surgery.

4. The Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada and The Quebec Consortium for Industrial Research and Innovation in Medical Technology are funding much of the project.
