A new study published in Spine examines the patient-reported outcomes and costs associated with revision surgery for cervical spine disease.
Study authors examined data from a prospective registry database detailing patients who underwent spine surgery from October 2010 to January 2016. There were 115 patients included in the study who underwent surgery for recurrent disease, pseudoarthrosis and adjacent segment disease.
The key findings include:
1. Patient-reported outcomes significantly improved in the year after surgery for all patients.
2. Revision surgery costs were between $21,294 and $23,914 for all procedures.
3. All revision groups reported similar costs for their surgery.
4. Depending on the etiology, patient satisfaction was 75.5 percent to 85.7 percent.
5. Among all patients, the complication rate was 4 percent to 9 percent.
"On the basis of our analysis, a majority of patients can expect to receive some benefit by 12 months and are satisfied with their procedure," concluded the study authors.
