Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital physicians perform complex spinal surgery: 5 key points

Spine

Houston Methodist Sugar Land Hospital's Neuroscience & Spine Center physicians completed a complex spine procedure involving a patient's spine protruding into her skull, according to fortbendstar.com.

Here are five key points:

1. The patient's spine compressed her brain stem, causing her to lose movement in her arms and hands.

2. The patient also had difficulty walking and experienced neck pain, numbness and tingling.

3. Neurosurgeons Rajesh Bindal, MD, and John Park, MD, as well as ear, nose and throat specialist Clement Chow, MD, performed the complex trans-oral surgery. The surgeons entered through her mouth, accessing the juncture where the spine met the skull base.

4. The surgeons trimmed excess bone that compressed the brain stem.

5. The patient can now walk.
