1. People with low back pain may benefit from curling up in the fetal position for a couple of hours. Extreme pain may require one to two days of rest.

 

2. Using a warming pad for a few minutes can loosen a stiff back, and icing the back for 15 or 20 minutes after activity can decrease swelling and provide quick pain relief.

 

3. Dieting and exercising can pay off for obese patients, as well as physical therapy.

 

4. These activities should be avoided:

 

  • Heavy lifting
  • Deep bending at the waist
  • Deep twisting
  • Headstands

 

5. Coping techniques, such as relaxation, meditation, visual imagery, biofeedback and hypnosis, along with a positive attitude, can have a significant impact in moderating neck or back pain.
