Craig Hospital, a rehabilitation hospital in Denver for patients with spinal cord and brain injuries, and the Kelly Brush Foundation, a nonprofit helping spinal cord injury patients return to an active lifestyle, are partnering to offer scholarships to Craig Hospital graduates.
Here are five highlights:
1. The scholarships will fund adaptive sports and recreational equipment.
2. The "Granting Independence" SCI Adaptive Equipment Scholarships total $10,000 and will be given to six people for purchasing adaptive equipment.
3. Adaptive equipment usually costs $3,000 and more.
4. People with spinal cord injuries may not be able to afford adaptive equipment due to their medical costs from their injuries.
5. The hospital will also offer an adaptive equipment scholarship for Craig Hospital graduates with traumatic brain injury.
"Sport and recreation can help develop confidence, independence and strength, both physical and emotional," said Tom Carr, director of therapeutic recreation, Craig Hospital. "At Craig Hospital, we often see the barrier to participation is the ability to afford the piece of equipment."
