Houston-based Mischer Neuroscience Institute announced that neurosurgeon Baraa Al-Hafez, MD, is now seeing patients in Katy, Texas, according to a Houston Chronicle report.

Here are five key points:

1. Dr. Al-Hafez is a neurosurgeon providing care at Mischer Neuroscience Institute, a collaboration between Memorial Hermann-Texas Medical Center in Houston and The University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston Medical School. He is a clinical assistant professor in the Vivian L. Smith Department of Neurosurgery at UT Health Medical School.

2. Dr. Al-Hafez has expertise in both spine and brain surgery. He has a wide range of clinical interests, including lumbar degenerative disc disease, spinal fusion, tethered spinal cord, trigeminal neuralgia, ulnar neuropathy, spondylolisthesis, chiari malformations and vertebral compression fractures.

3. Prior to joining Mischer Neuroscience Institute, Dr. Al-Hafez provided care at hospitals affiliated with Baylor College of Medicine, including Ben Taub General Hospital, Texas Children's Hospital and MD Anderson Cancer Center, all located in Houston. He is a member of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons.

4. Dr. Al-Hafez has served as co-investigator of two National Institutes of Health grants to study the progression of spinal cord injuries, with a focus on neural fiber organization and vascular plasticity. He is also the co-author of research published in the Journal of Magnetic Resonance Imaging, Brain Research and Journal of Applied Physiology.

5. Several spine and neurosurgeons have opened new offices and joined new practices. Armin Oskouei, MD, opened Ortho Sport and Spine Physicians in Atlanta earlier this month, and in April, 20 spine surgeons and neurospine surgeons joined new practices or received new titles.
