Here are 17 spine surgeons who hold leadership positions in state orthopedic societies.
Larry D. Cordell, MD (Midwest Spine Care, Overland Park, Kan.). Dr. Cordell is on the Board of Councilors for the Kansas Orthopaedic Society. He is a past president of the society and previously served in the United States Army. He has a professional interest in treating patients with deformity, arthritis and tumors in the spine and neck. He practices at Midwest Spine Center and is a member of North American Spine Society and Society of Military Orthopaedic Surgeons. Dr. Cordell earned his medical degree at the University of Kansas Medical School in Kansas City and completed his in pediatric orthopedics residency at the Alfred I. Alan Dacre, MD (OrthoMontana, Billings).

During his career, Dr. Silcox has been the principle investigator for two FDA trials in Georgia. Samuel E. Smith, MD (Front Range Orthopedics, Longmont, Colo.). Dr. Smith is the secretary treasurer of the Colorado Orthopaedic Society. He is also a past president of the society. He has a professional interest in treating spine and scoliosis disorders, and performs procedures such as lateral lumbar interbody fusion and disc arthroplasty. He is a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and is one of the few spine surgeons in Connecticut who will perform total lumbar disc replacement surgery. He currently practices with Litchfield Hills Orthopaedic Associates, but he previously served as chief of spine and scoliosis service at Sound Shore Medical Center in New Rochelle, N.Y. Dr. Spero treats several conditions, including degenerative disc disease, spinal stenosis and sacroiliac joint dysfunction. He earned his medical degree at Boston University School of Medicine and completed his residency in orthopedic surgery at Albert Einstein College of Medicine in Bronx, N.Y. Jeffery C. Wang, MD (UCLA Health, Los Angeles). Dr. Wang is on the board of directors for the California Orthopaedic Association. He has a clinical interest in several areas concerning the spine, including artificial disc replacement, sports spine injuries and spinal trauma. Dr. Wang currently serves as the director of the UCLA Spine Surgery Fellowship and has had leadership roles in the North American Spine Society, Cervical Spine Research Society and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons. Stuart L. Weinstein, MD (University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City).
