18 hospitals expanding spine programs

Since the beginning of the year, Becker's Spine Review has reported on 18 hospitals expanding spine programs:

1. Manitowoc, Wis.-based Holy Family Memorial Medical Center opened the HFM Spine Clinic In October. 

2. In September, New York City-based Mount Sinai Health System opened an eight-physician facility providing spine, orthopedic and musculoskeletal oncology care in Scarsdale, N.Y.

3. The NorthShore Spine Center opened at Skokie (Ill.) Hospital in August. The center offers robotic surgery, motion preservation techniques and other minimally invasive approaches to spine surgery.

4. In August, Mercy Hospital Arkansas in Rogers opened a 22-bed postoperative unit for patients recovering from spine and orthopedic surgeries.

5. In July, Sarasota (Fla.) Memorial opened a $27 million radiation oncology center that treats tumors of the spine, head and neck.

6. The Orthopedic & Spine Tower at Huntsville (Ala.) Hospital reached its structural completion in July. The $250 million center will feature 24 operating rooms and open in summer 2021.

7. Midland (Texas) Memorial Hospital received initial certification for its spine surgery program in July. The hospital recently acquired a Mazor X robot.

8. Manhattan (Kan.) Surgical Hospital began offering spine and neurosurgery in June. Two surgeons joined the hospital through a partnership with Topeka, Kan.-based Stormont Vail Health.

9. North Platte, Neb.-based Great Plains Health opened its brain and spine center in June.

10. Covenant Medical Center in Lubbock, Texas, is building a six-story spine and orthopedic tower that will cost $140 million. The tower is set to open in early 2022.

11. Tampa (Fla.) General Hospital partnered with Louisville, Ky.-based Kindred Healthcare in May to develop a $35 million rehab facility for spinal cord injury.

12. Penn Highlands Dubois (Pa.) is developing a building that will house The Brain and Spine Center and an orthopedic Center of Excellence. The project is part of a $111 million expansion announced by Penn Highlands Healthcare last year.

13. Menorah (Kan.) Medical Center, of HCA Midwest Health, plans to open a $65 million facility that will focus on orthopedics and neuroscience by the end of year.

14. Park Ridge, Ill.-based Advocate Lutheran General Hospital said in February that it is moving its Brain and Spine Institute into a new facility with 12 exam rooms and 12 consultation rooms.

15. In February, Midwest Orthopaedic Hospital at UnityPoint Health-Proctor opened in Peoria, Ill., providing care for spine and orthopedic conditions.

16. Chester County (Pa.) Hospital – Penn Medicine completed construction of a $300 million facility in January, expanding spine and orthopedic services.

17. In January, New York City-based Hospital for Special Surgery opened a hospital in West Palm Beach, Fla., providing care for the full spectrum of spine and orthopedic conditions.

18. Cuyuna Regional Medical Center in Crosby, Minn., opened a spine and interventional pain clinic at the beginning of the year.
