Dr. Johnny Delashaw has license reinstated but can't hold medical leadership positions: 5 things to know

Spine

Former Seattle-based Swedish Health neurosurgeon and chair of the Swedish Neuroscience Institute Johnny Delashaw, MD, is now able to practice medicine again, with restrictions, according to the Seattle Times.

Here are five things to know:

1. The Washington Medical Commission suspended the neurosurgeon's license in May 2017 for posing an "immediate threat to the public health and safety." As the head of the neurosurgery department, the commission alleged Dr. Delashaw created an intimidating environment that may have negatively affected patient safety, according to the report.

2. The commission decided July 5 to reinstate Dr. Delashaw's medical license under three years of oversight. He is also unable to be employed in a medical leadership position, under the commission's stipulations. He must undergo behavioral evaluations and comply with recommendations.

3. In addition to the restrictions placed on his license, the commission ordered Dr. Delashaw to pay a $10,000 fine.

4. Through his lawyer, Dr. Delashaw reported to the Seattle Times that he would resume his "life's work" after having his license reinstated.

5. The commission decided to give Dr. Delashaw back his license because he had a long history of practicing medicine and no prior charges of misconduct.
