UC San Diego Health neurosurgeons began research on the effectiveness of the NeuroBlate system in treating brain tumors, according to UC San Diego Health.
Here are six things to know:
1. Monteris Medical is funding the study, called "Ablation of Abnormal Neurological Tissue using Robotic NeuroBlate System."
2. Clark C. Chen, MD, PhD, leader of the study, said, unlike other oncology studies, this study will focus on the quality of life of the patients.
3. The FDA-approved NeuroBlate system is a minimally invasive, laser device.
4. The study will analyze date from laser interstitial thermal therapy, which is designed to kill brain tumor tissues.
5. The procedure involves a tiny skin incision and a tiny opening in the skull for the laser probe.
6. Although the initial results of the study are positive, Dr. Chen cautions that new technologies must be monitored closely over a period of time.
