Dr. Gowriharan Thaiyananthan perform 1st SImmetry SI joint fusion in clinical study — 5 key points

Spine

Gowriharan Thaiyananthan, MD, founder and head neurosurgeon at BASIC Spine, treated his first patient in the EVoluSIon Study for the SImmetry Sacroiliac Joint Fusion System from Zyga Technology.

"The SImmetry technology helps provide an ideal environment for symptom relief to sacroiliac joint fusion patients," said Dr. Thaiyananthan. "It enables me to perform a true fusion, including decoritcation and bone grafting, through an efficient, minimally invasive approach; the procedure was completed in 30 minutes and the patient went home the next morning."

Here are five things to know about the technology:

1. The EVoluSION Study will join the Sacroiliac Joint Fusion System Study and other ongoing clinical trials to demonstrate the clinical value and proper utilization of this minimally invasive SI joint fusion option.

2. The AMA's Category I CPT code for MIS SI joint fusion went into effect on Jan. 1, 2015.

3. The study will be performed at 10 sites and include up to 50 patients.

4. The study examines the fusion and pain reduction after the SImmetry procedure.

5. There are some studies showing around 20 percent of all chronic low back pain derives from the sacroiliac joint.
