Here are eight things for spinal surgeons to know for Sept. 4, 2014.

Spine device company, surgeon pay $2.6M to settle Anti-Kickback suit
Omni Surgical — a company doing business as Spine 360 — allegedly paid kickbacks to Jamie Gottlieb, MD, to induce him to use the company's products. They were ordered to pay $2.6 million to the United States.

 

Do orthopedists or neurosurgeons have better spine patient outcomes?
The study found that among orthopedic surgeons performed the elective spine surgeries, patients were twice as likely to have a prolonged hospital length of stay than when neurosurgeons were performing the procedure. However, differences in 30-day postoperative outcomes were minimal.


 
Former ArthroCare executives get 10+ years in prison for fraud costing shareholders $750 million
Former CEO Michael Baker and CFO Michael Gluck were sentenced to 20 years and 10 years in prison, respectively, for their role in the fraud scheme. The executives convinced distributors to purchase more products than they needed so company sales and revenue would appear boosted.

Under the agreement, orthopedic surgeons from The CORE Institute will set a new standard for care at the hospital based on clinical metrics, standardized protocols, research and expertise.

 

Laser Spine Institute to build $56M HQ, ASC
The 176,000-square-foot facility is expected to create 100 jobs and increase patient capacity by 25 percent. LSI plans on beginning construction this fall and it is slated to be complete by 2016.

 

Global orthobiologics market estimated to reach $5.5 million by 2019
The orthobiologics market was valued at $3.7 million in 2012, according to a new report from Transparency Market Research. The market is expected to have a 5.9 percent compound annual growth rate.


 
Study: 30-year outcomes for cervical disc replacement
There were 21 patients who underwent cervical artificial disc replacement between 1980 and 1985 and had a 30 year follow-up. The study found that all 21 patients reported improvement from their preoperative neurological symptoms and none of the patients reported symptomatic adjacent segment degeneration at 30 years.

 

CMS finalizes MU flexibility
CMS has issued a final rule granting providers the flexibility in meaningful use attestation the agency had originally proposed back in May. Under the modified attestation schedule, providers that were not able to fully implement 2014 Edition certified EHR technology in time to successfully attest to meaningful use due to vendor delays will be able to use 2011 Edition CEHRT or a combination of 2011 and 2014 Edition to attest to either stage 1 or stage 2.
