Orthopedic and Spine Industry Leader to Know: Dr. David Geier of Medical University of South Carolina

As the director of the Medical University of South Carolina's sports medicine program and spokesman for the American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, David Geier, MD, has invested a great deal of time and energy into youth sports medicine and injury prevention.

This past year, AOSSM launched support for the STOP Sports Injuries campaign to educate coaches, parents and young athletes about injury prevention, a topic Dr. Geier feels is important for physicians to understand.

"We've always been good at treating injuries. It's on physicians to start doing the work to prevent them," says Dr. Geier. "You're never going to prevent all injuries, but we're going to knock some down."

A recent outbreak of compartment syndrome (muscles compressing nerves and blood vessels which limits blood and oxygen flow and results in nerve damage) in the triceps among young athletes prompted CNN to turn to Dr. Geier for professional advice.

"Compartment syndrome is an unusual issue for a bunch of kids on the same team in the same place," said Dr. Geier in the article. He said the condition is usually seen in runners' legs or pitchers' forearms.

In addition to his clinical work, Dr. Geier is a principle reviewer for the American Journal of Sports Medicine and a contributor to Orthopedic Surgery magazine. His past and present team affiliations include the Charleston Battery soccer team, U.S. Women's Soccer team and the Family Circle Cup tennis tournament. In addition to AOSSM, Dr. Geier is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, American College of Sports Medicine and associate member of the Arthroscopy Association of North America.

Dr. Geier earned his medical degree from Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston and completed his residency at the University of Tennessee Campbell Clinic in Memphis. His additional training includes a fellowship at Washington University in St. Louis.
