Gary Michelson, MD, a retired orthopedic surgeon and spine device inventor, donated $50 million to the University of Southern California for the construction of a bioscience research building, according to a Los Angeles Times report. The building, to be called the USC Michelson Center for Convergent Bioscience, will feature 30 labs for research on various biomedical topics and is expected to be completed in three years. Dr. Michelson's donation will make up a little less than half the total cost needed for the project.

Dr. Michelson graduated from Hahnemann Medical College in Philadelphia. He holds hundreds of patents for orthopedic devices, instruments and implants, and he received $1.35 billion from a medical device manufacturer for the rights to his implants.
