Spine Surgeon Leader to Know: Dr. Michael Heggeness of Kansas University School of Medicine

Michael Heggeness, MD, is chairman and program director of orthopedics at the KU School of Medicine–Wichita. He also provides care at Robert J. Dole VA Medical Center in Wichita. Dr. Heggeness previously served as director of the spine surgery fellowship program and professor of orthopedic surgery at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. He is a past president of the North American Spine Society and a member of the Cervical Spine Research Society and American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.

Dr. Heggeness has a wide array of clinical interests, including back injuries, head and neck disorders, internal fracture fixation, osteoporosis, spinal disorders and spinal fractures. He has earned several awards from professional organizations including the Cervical Spine Research Society. His work has been published in numerous peer-reviewed journals, such as Journal of Spinal Disorders, Spine and Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery and Research.

 

Dr. Heggeness received his medical degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine and completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the St. Luke's Roosevelt Hospital Center in New York. He has also completed an orthopedic spine surgery fellowship at the University of Toronto/Toronto General Hospital in Canada.
