Spine Surgeon Leader to Know: Dr. Harvey Smith of Penn Medicine

Harvey E. Smith, MD, is an assistant professor of orthopedic surgery at the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia and the Philadelphia VA Medical Center. He has hospital privileges at New England Baptist Hospital in Boston. He is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, AO Spine North America and North American Spine Society.

Dr. Smith's clinical interests include cervical herniated disc, cervical kyphosis, disc replacement, endoscopic discectomy, kyphosis, microdiscectomy, spine stabilization, spondylolisthesis, sciatica, scoliosis and cervical myelopathy.

 

His research interests are varied and include minimally invasive surgery and image-guidance navigation systems. He has authored more than 25 peer-reviewed journal articles and more than 15 textbook chapters. During the course of his career he has been awarded a Cervical Spine Research Society Fellow Research Grant as well as AOSpine North America Fellow's Forum Research Award.

 

Dr. Smith serves as a reviewer for the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery, The Spine Journal and Journal of Magnetic Resonance Imaging. He previously served editor as the Jefferson Orthopaedic Journal.

 

Dr. Smith earned his medical degree at Pennsylvania State Hershey (Pa.) University College of Medicine and completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. He has completed a spine fellowship at Thomas Jefferson University and The Rothman Institute in Philadelphia.
