Orthopedic medtech leadership shakeups: 7 new CEOs enter the fray

Changes are afoot in the orthopedic device industry, as several medtech companies have appointed new CEOs in 2022.

Seven CEO appointments in the orthopedic medtech industry:

1. Deepak Nath, PhD, will take over as CEO of Smith+Nephew on April 1. Dr. Nath, who served in leadership roles at Siemens Healthineers and Abbott, is replacing Ronald Diggelmann, who held the role since 2019.

2. Johnson & Johnson appointed Joaquin Duato to lead the company in January. Mr. Duato replaced Alex Gorsky as CEO after more than 30 years at Johnson & Johnson in multiple business sectors, geographies and functions. Mr. Gorsky had served as CEO since 2012.

3. Zimmer Biomet's spine and dental spinoff, ZimVie — which completed its separation March 1 — hired Vafa Jamali as CEO. Mr. Jamali has more than 25 years of experience in the medtech industry, including positions at Medtronic, Covidien, Cardinal Health and Baxter.

4. Ortho Regenerative Technologies named Philippe Deschamps president and CEO in March, replacing Claude DeLuc, who held the role for three years. Mr. Deschamps has experience leading various healthcare companies, including Helius Medical Technologies, GSW Worldwide and MediMedia Health.

5. Augmedics appointed Kevin Hykes president and CEO in January. Mr. Hykes has 30 years of experience in the medtech industry, including executive roles at Medtronic, Boston Scientific and Olympus.

6. Catalyst OrthoScience named Carl O'Connell president and CEO in January. Mr. O'Connell previously held leadership positions at Stryker, Wright Medical, Xtant Medical, Stryker and Cerebrotech Medical Systems. He succeeds Brian Hutchinson at Catalyst OrthoScience.

7. SI-Bone unveiled Laura Francis as its next CEO in January. Ms. Francis, former CFO and COO, succeeds Jeff Dunn, who founded the company in 2008.
