4 key notes on BMP & spinal fusion markets

Spinal Tech

A new report from Transparency Market Research examines how the BMP and spinal fusion fields intersect, according to a MedGadget report.

Here are four key notes on the markets:

1. The global BMP market is expected to reach $587 million by 2022, with a compound annual growth rate of 2.1 percent. There are 20 different BMPs discovered and BMP 2, 7 and 9 have osteoinductive property for bone formation.

2. Only BMP-2 and BMP-7 are commercially available and involved in synthesizing musculoskeletal tissue formation, matrix and extracellular growth. The proteins trigger intracellular signal pathways by binding to the mesenchymal stem cell receptors, which transforms stem cells into tissue-specific progenitor cells.

3. The FDA has approved recombinant bone morphogenetic proteins-2 and rhBMP-7 for acute and open tibial shaft fractures. rhBMP-7 is also used for recalcitrant long bone nonunion when autograft or other treatment isn't feasible. Spinal fusion surgeries drive demand for the global BMP market.

4. In 2013, spinal fusion accounted for 76.5 percent of the overall BMP market in North America. Europe followed North America, but moving forward the Asia Pacific market is expected to grow due to a surge in the geriatric population.
