Top 3 cities for pharmaceutical payments to physicians

Spinal Tech

A new survey from BetterDoctor.com ranks cities by the amount of money physicians practicing there receive from pharmaceutical companies, according to a KCUR report.

The survey uses the CMS Open Payments database for rankings, which was launched last year. The most recent numbers cover payments between August and December of 2013. Here are three cities highlighted in the report:

1. Kansas City topped the list, where physicians are paid an average of $2,945 by drug makers.

2. Tyler, Texas ranked number two, where physicians are paid on average $2,679 by drug makers.

3. Physicians in Dallas ranked number three, being paid around $1,574 on average by drug makers.

However, the numbers can be deceiving. The report notes one physician in Kansas City received $1.76 million during the payment period, which was the most of any physician from the city by far. The surgeon, Roger P. Jackson, MD, invented a spine surgery operating table and receives royalties.
