ConforMIS announced results from a clinical study evaluating hospital outcomes and costs in patients undergoing total knee arthroplasty using ConforMIS iTotal customized knee implants compared with standard, off-the-shelf implants.
Researchers conducted a retrospective analysis of 248 total knee arthroplasty hospitalizations, of which 126 patients received ConforMIS iTotal customized knee implants and 122 received standard implants between March 2010 and November 2013.
According to the analysis, patients with the off-the-shelf implants had an adverse event rate of 13.9 percent, while the rate for patients with the ConforMIS implant was 1.6 percent. Also, patients treated with ConforMIS implants had blood transfusion rates of 2.4 percent compared with 10.7 percent for the OTS implants.
The analysis also revealed that 0.8 percent of patients with ConforMIS were discharged to more costly acute-care facilities as compared to 7.4 percent for patients with standard implants.
The results were presented by Steven D. Culler, PhD, associate professor at Rollins School of Public Health at Emory University in Atlanta, at the 2014 International Congress for Joint Reconstruction Pan Pacific Orthopaedic Congress that recently convened in Hawaii.
