Smith & Nephew announced a voluntary market withdrawal of the optional metal liner component of its R3 Acetabular System. The recall doesn't impactother R3 Systems or change current practice for patient follow-up care for the component. "We regularly review the effectiveness of our products and are not satisfied with the clinical results of the component," said Andy Weymann, MD, chief medical officer for Smith & Nephew.
The component was introduced in 2007 and launched globally in 2009. There have been 7,700 of the metal liners implanted to date, with a majority being used in stemmed total hip replacements. However, procedures using the metal liner component accounted for less than 1 percent of Smith & Nephew's global hip implant revenue.
