Orthopedic

The American Geriatrics Society and the Association of Directors of Geriatric Academy Programs are teaming up to devise a national dissemination plan for a program to enhance care for older adults hospitalized with hip fractures, according to Medical Xpress.

Here are six things to know:

1. The co-management intervention aligns geriatric professionals as co-leaders in the pre- and postoperative management of older patients with hip fractures.

2. The program's goal is to improve patient outcomes while reducing healthcare spending.

3. The John A. Hartford foundation is supporting the program that will train health professionals in employing geriatric principles to enhance the health of senior patients.

4. The AGS and the ADGAP's program will engage potential sites for the co-management intervention and will refine specified tools and models to integrate geriatrics and orthopedics care delivery.

5. The AGS and ADGAP aim to eventually create a successful business enterprise to market and dissemination the co-management intervention to more than 100 health facilities, systems and academic training hospitals.

6. Hip fractures account for the hospitalization of 258,000 people each year and are projected to impact 500,000 patients by 2040.
