Orthopedic surgeon suspended over fraudulent prescriptions

The North Carolina Medical Board suspended orthopedic surgeon Eric Brietbart, MD, indefinitely for writing fradulent prescriptions, The Bladen Journal reported Dec. 11.

Dr. Brietbart was charged with writing the fraudulent prescriptions for several friends and coworkers at UNC Health Southeastern in Lumberton, N.C., the report said. In February and July, the N.C. Medical Board received two letters from Dr. Breitbart that acknowledged the inappropriate prescriptions.

Fraudulent prescriptions were given to five people and included Phentermine, Cycotec, Percocet and Xanax. In February, he placed hs license on inactive status, the report said. 

UNC Health Southeastern in Lumberton told the publication that Dr. Breitbart was "no longer employed or affiliated" with the organization. Dr. Breitbart didn't respond to a request for comment from The Bladen Journal.
