8 risk factors for falls after joint replacement

A study published in Osteoarthritis and Cartilage examined fall risk factors for total hip and total knee arthroplasty patients.

Researchers conducted a systematic review of 12 studies with 1,292,689 participants. They identified eight risk factors with at least moderate evidence levels, classifying them as either inpatient or post-discharge risk factors.

Inpatient fall risk factors:

  • Postoperative complications or comorbidities
  • Revision surgery

Post-discharge fall risk factors:

  • Medications
  • Psychiatric diseases
  • Living alone
  • Prior TKA
  • Prior fall history
  • Being female
