Mayo Clinic spine patients can recover from surgery at 'guest apartments'

Practice Management

Rochester, Minn.-based Mayo Clinic has launched an initiative that lets surgical patients recover in an apartment nearby the hospital.

The program, called Monitoring at Charter House, allows physicians to arrange for patients who meet a certain criteria to stay at the "guest apartments" after surgery rather than the hospital, according to an April 6 news release. Apartments are equipped with remote monitoring technology, and patients are connected to a care team 24/7.

"It provides a solution for those patients who are too sick to go home after surgery but not so sick they need to be in the hospital," Mohamad Bydon, MD, a neurosurgeon who has had spine patients stay at the apartments. "With this program, we are able to offer the right care in the right setting for the right patient. Because the patient is more comfortable, it helps speed recovery."

Monitoring at Charter House is a collaboration between Mayo Clinic Hospital-Rochester and Mayo Clinic Advanced Care at Home, part of the Mayo Clinic Center for Digital Health.

Mayo Clinic Florida established a similar program called Care Hotel, in which patients recover at a nearby hotel and have access to their care team through remote monitoring equipment.
