Maine hospital performs its 1st total ankle replacement — 4 things to know

Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor successfully completed its first total ankle replacement, according to local NBC affiliate News Center Maine.

Four things to know:

1. The first procedure was a trans fibular total ankle replacement.

2. Founded in 1892, EMMC is a 411-bed specialty referral hospital, providing care throughout Central, Eastern and Northern Maine.

3. The hospital is part of Brewer, Maine-based Northern Light Health, a physician-led system with nine hospitals, 37 primary care locations and more than 12,000 staff in Maine, according to its website.

4. EMMC is a level 2 trauma center and employs more than 450 physicians.
